West End Blues uses a typical New Orleans front line of trumpet, clarinet and trombone with a rhythm section of piano, banjo and percussion. Armstrong was a leader in the move away from the early New Orleans style of jazz counterpoint, with its interweaving lines for clarinet, trumpet and trombone, towards a style dominated by soloists.

Louis Armstrong was born and raised in New Orleans during the first 20 years of the 20 th century. From onwards he became known as an inventive trumpet and corn player. With his recognizable voice and skilled scat singing, he released classics like "West End Blues" and "Ain't Misbehavin'".
